The most critical element of the best fitness apps is their functionality. It absolutely must be intuitive, scalable, and packed with features for every fitness goal. You can introduce real value to your users if your app meets all three requirements. With a 34.3% market share in 2024, the fitness products and training segment dominated the healthcare industry, meaning they’re highly likely to gain even more momentum in 2025 and beyond.

But what exactly is it worth adding to your health and fitness app? How do you understand what feature set fits within the MVP version and what can be added later? How can you know the psychology behind user decisions and adapt your product accordingly? The article uncovers how the NERDZ LAB team transformed our Reebok Fitness app into an all‑in‑one fitness ecosystem with thoughtful logic behind every user interaction. We uncover what features we’ve added, why we did so, and how.

Who is NERDZ LAB & our role in the Reebok Fitness App

Applying our expertise as an end-to-end health and wellness app development company, we built a comprehensive fitness app and gym management platform, which was later rebranded as the Reebok Fitness App. We initially took ownership of development and later expanded our role to include full design responsibility. NERDZ LAB helped Reebok execute the following:

  • Business Analysis & Product Discovery. We worked closely with Reebok to define the concept, choose key features, and adapt it to fit the needs of modern health application users.
  • UX/UI Design. After analyzing all business requirements, our design team created a refined interface aligned with Reebok’s brand DNA and optimized for user engagement.
  • Mobile App development. Using native Swift & Kotlin for top-notch performance, speed, and cost-effectiveness, we developed a cross-platform training app.
  • Backend Engineering. In order to facilitate live video streaming, scalable workouts, user progress tracking, and other features, we developed a strong backend architecture.
  • Third-Party Integrations. Firebase, video hosting, and CMS systems were among the tools we connected to ensure the app has real-time functionality and dynamic content.
  • QA & Testing. Our expert team of QAs safeguarded smooth performance across various devices and operating systems, continuously testing the app throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Project Management & Communication. Using Agile methodologies for iterative development and quick feedback loops, NERDZ LAB worked closely with the Reebok team, ensuring everyone remains in the loop.

The journey towards a scalable and versatile app wasn’t without challenges: strict Reebok branding guidelines, wearables integration, and balancing uniqueness and standardization required close attention to detail, constant iterations, and close collaboration between designers and developers. But our extensive industry expertise helped us deliver a top-notch app that members love. The Reebok Fitness App is still being refined and updated with new features, though it already empowers health enthusiasts worldwide.

Reebok Fitness App: core features overview

So, without further ado, let’s uncover the bread and butter of the app and why this functionality has become the foundation of a modern health application that resonates.

On-demand workouts

Adopting a customized, high-tech virtual exercise program has emerged as one of the most important ways to promote overall physical and mental health. Various categories of users want a diverse range of workouts, including, but not limited to:

  • Strength training/weightlifting
  • Cardio
  • Pilates
  • Yoga
  • Flexibility & stretching

Health and wellness fans are also interested in guided meditations, breathwork, and holistic recovery techniques. At the same time, having a diverse range of workouts in your arsenal comes with a challenge. Your app still has to be easy to navigate for all members. Armed with these insights, we took up the challenge. We managed to add various types of workouts, including weight loss, endurance, and strength increase. On top of that, the Reebok App also supports wellness and mental training, meaning we’ve developed a well-rounded system that provides the most value for our customers.

Wellness category

Since we’ve already touched upon the mental health category, our team has also included the feature to meet the needs of users seeking relaxation, mindfulness, and stress relief practices. According to the most recent data, the majority of individuals worldwide have experienced stress, and slightly more than three out of five, or 62% on average, across 31 countries report having experienced stress to the point where it has at least once affected their day-to-day activities.

Naturally, severe mental health cases require medical attention, yet daily relaxation practices like meditation and breathing techniques prove to be effective in relieving stress and anxiety. Plus, mental well-being can improve physical health, preventing conditions like heart attacks and strokes.

This is why we’ve integrated this category, granting additional value for our users and engaging them even more. Our app supports breathing techniques, guided meditations, and mindfulness exercises. On top of that, we’ve added mood-boosting podcasts, which are a great addition to your daily routine. All these features helped us offer a well-rounded solution that nurtures both body and mind.

IoT and wearable device integration

The American College of Sports Medicine ranked wearable technology as the top 2025 trend based on an annual survey of 2,000 fitness industry practitioners, researchers, and physicians. According to another study, people who participated in a remote coaching program assisted by a wearable device had a ten times higher chance of starting an exercise routine than those who only got remote coaching. These devices can monitor all sorts of health data, from stepcounts and calories burnt to heart rate and the time required for optimal post-workout recovery.

Since this data greatly benefits the users, our team made the decision to opt for wearable device integration. From basic Apple Watches to FitBit or Garmin, the Reebok App can receive and analyse all incoming data, forming a data pipeline cornerstone of the application. Many modern users prefer these devices for their convenience, real-time insights, and ability to passively track health metrics, so failing to account for wearables can lead to massive user drop-offs. Lastly, it acts as a great gamification feature when additional data is shown and turned into cool insights, where members can follow their progress.

So, what did the NERDZ LAB team achieve with wearable device integration?

  • Improved user engagement by supporting passive health indicators tracking and personalized feedback.
  • Created a reliable data pipeline supporting core app features and long-term user insights.
  • Boosted user motivation with gamified progress monitoring and actionable metrics.
  • Increased retention potential by prioritizing user preferences for smart fitness tracking.
  • Improved onboarding and habit building since users are much more likely to begin and maintain fitness routines.

Progress tracking feature

As with most health and wellness apps, having constant access to your progress is nothing new. The value this feature brings to the table is non-negotiable. But we’ve discovered a new, significant benefit that’s invisible until you connect the dots. The increased level of gamification boosts the app’s average session time, lowers drop-off rates, and generally helps users enjoy the app. People keep checking how high their stress levels are, comparing their stats with friends, or reviewing changing sleep patterns.

Don’t overlook this one simple but powerful feature because it can significantly improve your marketing stats. This simple addition to your product can add unexpected value, an angle you might’ve missed entirely.

We also combined Apple HealthKit and Google Health Connect to provide fitness tracking, allowing users to track sleep, exercise, steps, and more in one place. Automatic syncing of data results in an easily readable summary. Plus, for an even more comprehensive fitness experience, we integrated Spotify and YouTube Music to enhance exercises, allowing users to enjoy their favorite playlists within the app.

Touching upon gamification, let’s dig deeper into this topic. As we’ve already mentioned, it’s crucial for keeping users engaged, increasing the time they spend in the app, and lowering the chances of app drop-offs.

Challenges functionality

Have you ever wondered what motivates users with active lifestyles the most? Data shows that when people reach a state of flow, their motivation peaks. This condition happens when they’re so focused on a task that they lose sight of the outside world. It typically occurs when working on a challenge of the perfect difficulty level, which is neither too easy nor too challenging to be tedious or stressful. This is why it’s crucial to add a challenge feature that allows individuals to compete with friends and tackle various tasks, making the journey more interactive, rewarding, and habit-forming.

Considering everything above, the NERDZ LAB team implemented extensive functionality, inviting users to take part in challenges, climb leaderboards, and even win real-life prizes, because turning goals into games is how you keep people coming back for more!

Community

As proven by applications like Instagram or TikTok, a sense of community is valuable to users. It all comes from human nature and our hidden desire for social approval and connection. Our team created a built-in social space allowing fitness fans to share workouts, support friends, and connect with a community of like-minded people.

A word of caution: this feature can be hard to pull off right, as it’s not easy to compete with market titans that have set a high standard. Still, if you get it right and hook multiple users, you set yourself up to earn valuable user attention and screen time.

One additional complexity lies in enabling interaction between individuals. You need to moderate it properly so no one is harassed. What happens in your health app is your responsibility, which can lead to serious issues if mishandled. Here’s the list of ways you can mitigate this issue:

  • Establish community guidelines to clarify what is and isn’t acceptable behavior.
  • Add automated moderation tools to identify offensive content or language.
  • Provide easy-to-use reporting features, helping users flag unwanted behavior.
  • Assign human moderators to examine detected content and take appropriate action.
  • Prioritize user safety and privacy settings to help them control who can interact with them.
  • Test community features with limited access before scaling.

Offline or low internet mode

When it comes to health and fitness, a lot of training happens in places with low internet connectivity. For example, a run might pass through a tunnel or a forest, and many gyms are located in underground spaces simply because of lower rental costs (considering the large areas they need to operate).

Now imagine this: even if the internet connection is generally average, 1 out of 10 times it might be too slow or unstable. This issue can cause data loss, leading to unreliable workout results or progress tracking. Put yourself in your users’ shoes—how many times would this need to happen before you gave up on the app?

These issues make it crucial to prepare your app for low-connectivity scenarios. Give users the ability to view cached data and sync their workouts once the internet connection is restored. And this is precisely what we’ve done at NERDZ LAB. Our solution-oriented delivery approach ensures that fitness lovers can continue their journey uninterrupted, with flawless offline access and automatic data synchronization once the connection is back.

Nutritional guidance

Nutrition has a vital role in both development and health. Increased longevity, stronger immune systems, safer pregnancies and deliveries, decreased risk of non-communicable diseases (including diabetes and cardiovascular disease), and better health for mothers, infants, and children are all associated with better nutrition.

The best fitness applications help users track and assess eating habits and risk factors for diet-related illnesses. Plus, they allow people to gain autonomy and take control of their dietary decisions. For users who prefer less face-to-face interaction with medical professionals, the ability to track food consumption, set goals, and track progress in private can provide unprecedented value.

Our team fully acknowledged the importance of integrating nutrition into the Reebok App. Now, it provides recipes with filters based on meal type, diet preferences, and food limitations, ranging from nutritious meals to energizing smoothies.
